Sydney Contemporary attracts 26,500 art lovers over five days with Deutsche Bank as Principal Partner

Sydney Contemporary, Australia’s premier international art fair, attracted 26,500 art lovers and clocked up AUD 16 million in artwork sales over its five-day presentation at multi-arts precinct Carriageworks from 6 – 10 September.

Deutsche Bank’s Australia & New Zealand CEO, Anthony Miller, said: "We were thrilled to be Principal Partner for the first time and a real part of the fair through our commissioned work Double Take by Australian artist Robyn Stacey, which proved to be very popular.”

Deutsche Bank commissioned Stacey to create a walk-in ‘camera obscura’ onsite. Double Take was positioned at the entrance to Sydney Contemporary for the duration of the fair and was free for all visitors to experience.

Miller added: “Ultimately, it is all about making contemporary art accessible to as many people as possible and judging by the crowds this goal was achieved. It was a fantastic opportunity for Deutsche Bank to engage with the art loving public, clients and employees and we are looking forward to 2018.”

Sydney Contemporary 2017 delivered a program of talks and tours by industry leaders, including specially curated areas of the fair: Video Contemporary, Installation Contemporary and Performance Contemporary. This year, Kid Contemporary saw artist Hiromi Tango create an immersive ‘Red Room’ that was popular with families.  

“The visitor turnout and sales for the third edition of Sydney Contemporary have again surpassed expectations. The feedback we’ve had has been extremely positive from exhibitors with participating galleries reporting very strong sales across the board,” said Tim Etchells, founder and owner of Sydney Contemporary.

Fair Director, Barry Keldoulis, said: “It was evident that the artists and their galleries had put their best feet forward and the visitor experience was further enhanced by the extraordinary Installation, Video, Performance, Paper and Kid Contemporary sections. So the visitors were happy, and record sales followed. The galleries and artists are happy, and I’m thrilled.”

The fair will return 12-16 September 2018 with Deutsche Bank as Principal Partner.
